In my direct experience, the Agency is downright professional, lean and virtuous in contrast to State. State is the MOST political department in the Executive, they meet and travel with Hill members and staffers Every, Day. Of. The. Week. The Executive can't fart without State staffers running over to tell the hill rats. The actual Secretary of State, to function within State is in practice run as a private office with a small group and some trusted FSO's like Grenell. You could fire 2/3 of main State and it would probably function better. State is a huge - I mean Huge! - organization - that duplicates in some respect almost every function of every other Agency of the Executive. But the Executive can't touch them because the Senate protects them. That's why you see Rand's - what do you people do all day, and isn't this your one job, and you f that up too attitude spill out in his hearings.
Pretty sure that extreme pruning of the various government staff bloated agencies will come after the election. Just too much chaos will be unleashed if he wipes out decades of bureaucratic power creep in a series of executive actions to risk it before his second term is secured. He already did the ground work with the government shutdown and the studies they ran which found huge improvements in efficiency by cutting the staff to the bone and sending the dead weight home on vacation.
I wish they would re-populate where the headquarters are for these agencies and departments. It makes no sense for their headquarters to be in Washington DC/Virginia. Put some of those agencies in fly over country and you'll get more responsive and representative government agencies.
Or better yet kick it all back to the states like it should be. The national government should be concerned with international matters and not being a nanny for the states overriding their own states rights.
