Go 40 years before that and yes, FDR was president, but the realignment was below him, giving us Eisenhower, victory in WW2, and the boom that made us the power house we are over the next 30 years (1940-1975). Go 40 years before that, the realignment was the other direction again, Woodrow Wilson, Imperialism, Federal Reserve, Income taxes (1895-1920). 40 years before that, birth of the Republican party, Lincoln, ending slavery, etc...(1860-1880). Then go 40 years before that and you get the seeds of civil war, lame duck presidents, manifest destiny, and Monroe Doctrine(good and bad) (1820-1840). Then finally, 40 years before that, the founding of our country (1776-1791).
