That’s a new phone. I don’t think I would trust that it isn’t set up to spy to the max that the hardware will allow. I guess my point is I would bet it still tracks your location and aggregates that data into some sort of database/profile about you.

An open source smartphone...

A Linux phone, with privacy and open source at the forefront of the design. There are hardware kill switches for the camera, microphone, WiFi/Bluetooth, and baseband on the side of the phone, ensuring none of the I/O turns on unless you want it to. The OS is the Free Software Foundation endorsed by PureOS, a Linux distribution that, in this case, has been reworked with a mobile UI...

This phone really runs full desktop-class Linux. Those same videos show the dev kit running things like the APT package manager through a terminal, a desktop version of Solitaire, Emacs, the Gnome disk utility, DOSBox, Apache Web Server, and more. If it runs on your desktop Linux computer, it will probably run on the Librem 5, albeit with a possibly not-touch-friendly UI. The Librem 5 can even be hooked up to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and you can run all these Linux apps with the normal input tools.”

12
NYC_4_Trump 12 points ago +12 / -0

This is the answer. When you're not using the phone, toss it in the bag.

Or better yet: get rid of your smartphone all together. It is becoming quite obvious that Big Brother relies on you adopting technology to make their surveillance possible.

I'm buying a rather dumb phone when my contract is up. I'll still toss it in a Faraday Bag when it is not in use.

5

You're right to be skeptical. Back in the 00's the FBI reflashed the mobs phones remotely, turning them into always-on listening devices, even when they were supposedly in off mode.

I don't even trust most consumer electronics these days. Went to go buy my old man a webcam for his birthday and every one available is from some no name chink brand you've never heard of. I wouldn't trust any of them to not be opening their own VPN to God knows where until I install them on an isolated node and sniff for any outward routed traffic.

Not with my phone. Yes it's powered by the phone company's -48VDC, but when the receiver is on the hook it's physically disconnected from the line. No way to monitor from that, unless someone broke into my house and messed with the wiring.

Also, it's mono.

3

10
ObjectiveReality 10 points ago +10 / -0

Librem 5 has 3 separate physical disconnect switches for the cameras/mic, the wifi, and the cellular receiver/transmitter/gps

Pre-order/waiting list is $750

If you want one where all the electronics are sourced from the US (which is awesome) they have an option for sale at $2k (yikes, but I'm glad it exists anyways)

Their competitor, PinePhone is going the opposite route with their kill switch option at $150 and you can get it now. The switches aren't as well placed, and the OS isn't as far along as with the Librem, but the price point is damn accessible.

Literally every other phone is a microsoft/google/apple spybox so honestly, everyone who cares about privacy and liberty should be grabbing one or the other. Yes they are linux phones, no neither OS is polished or complete... but do you want a functional phone with kill switches NOW or do you want to wait on kill switches until the OS is at the same polish as your current CIA pocket wiretap?

3
deleted 3 points ago +3 / -0
3
ObjectiveReality 3 points ago +3 / -0

$150 now and you can.

It makes calls, sends text, and can access the internet

Good luck getting candy crush to run... but it's a thing you can buy literally right now.

I think there is a reason many new phones have a battery that can't be removed. It's always listening.

11
PeytonManThing 11 points ago +12 / -1

No, iPhones do it to force you to pay them to replace your battery

9
Yuhboysinthebuildin 9 points ago +10 / -1

I agree. Samsung too. Of course there is some money in that. But that's not the whole story, IMO. There is too much money and power in the ability to be able to track your location and listen in at all times.

1
PeytonManThing 1 point ago +2 / -1

Like I told other people, test your theory. Turn off your phone for 24 hours, then turn it back on and see if the battery died. For your control you can leave the phone on on do not disturb and don’t use it for 24 hours

2
Yuhboysinthebuildin 2 points ago +3 / -1

The point is that there would be a built in reserve that doesn't show on your battery life indicator. That way even if your phone "dies", they're still getting your data. At which point you hurry to a charger before the reserve dries up.

4
Formerlurker92 4 points ago +5 / -1

They can do it for 2 reasons

1
PeytonManThing 1 point ago +3 / -2

It’s a pretty crazy conspiracy theory to say it’s to keep your phone on secretly even when off. You need evidence. I have evidence it’s wrong. Your battery holds its charge very well while off.

-1
I_Used_to_be_me -1 points ago +1 / -2

No power is needed to achieve this. Chips can be installed that listen, collect and send data (type in any variation of "chips, spy, no power," into your favorite search engine, add "China" for additional interesting results). Further, have you ever considered how landline telephones are able to operate without any power whatsoever? There are a number of ways a cell phone, or any electrical device, can be used to spy on you and/or collect and send data, most requiring little or no power/electricity at all, or connection to wifi or anything else. Its capabilities increase significantly when it does use even the most minuscule amount of power (like, might drain 1 or 2% of your battery, when powered off, over a span of weeks or months. A kindle reader, for instance, can remain on, while displaying advertisements, and it still takes months for it to drain)

2
Thrasymachus 2 points ago +2 / -0

I think you're right on this. Apple, for all their arrogance, thinks profit first and state-sanctioned surveillance second. Not to say the interests don't dovetail nicely (for them; it's a shit-sandwich for us), but whatever the outcome, they did it first and foremost as part of their No-Repair-Plus-Planned-Obsolescence portfolio planning that came to light years ago but was quietly squashed and unreported after a few lawsuit settlements.

9
tonightm16 9 points ago +9 / -0

If you get searched by the police and they find a turned-off phone they will most likely arrest you for endangering the public. Or they will fine you thousands of dollars.

3
p8riot 3 points ago +3 / -0

Then ditch the smart phone altogether and get a flip. Have we not yet recognized as a society how harmful these "smart" devices are to our culture?

4
Thrasymachus 4 points ago +4 / -0

They'll kill all 3G networks soon enough, mark my words, and then it'll be always-on smartphones only if you want to use a phone.

1
p8riot 1 point ago +1 / -0

5
FormerGraveheart 5 points ago +5 / -0

It was pushed out via Google Play Services. Make sure you don't have the Google Play Store or other Google apps installed, either

14
minttea2 14 points ago +14 / -0

Android:

Settings, search for Running Services, choose Running Services, go to Google Play Services, choose "Stop" for "ExposureMatchingService".

Should (usually does) kill it until either you restart your phone or Google runs an update.

You may need to activate the "Developer" capability option special menu on your phone to do the above. If so,...

  • Before you can enable Developer options on your Android phone or tablet, you'll first need to find your phone's build number. On most phones, you can simply type build number into the search field. Or it often is something like: Settings > System > About phone > Build number

  • Once you’ve found the screen with your Build number, you'll need to tap on it seven seven times. That's right: seven times. After a few taps, you'll see a small pop-up alert telling you that "You are now X steps away from being a developer" with a number that counts down with every additional tap. Once you have this, you have access to a few Android menus and stuff that are normally hidden.

  • If you ever want to undo the extra level of access, just (in the Developer Options menu) unclick (oh the top in highlight) "On". You will likely never want to do this, but...

4
JackMehoffer 4 points ago +4 / -0

You're the man now, dog.

3
minttea2 3 points ago +3 / -0

FYI - as extra info...

  • WHEN IT IS ON (I.E. IF YOU RESTART YOUR PHONE AFTER KILLING IT OR GOOGLE DOES AN UPDATE), ExpsoureMatchingService is not limited to regular bluetooth (toggling that off in regular settings will not F with it). But... In Android regular settings for blutooth, you have a location submenu named "improve accuracy", "even when Bluetooth is disabled". There you can switch on or off Wifi scanning and bluetooth scanning. It needs to be ON for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) (not your "normal" Bluetooth you use for earbuds, etc.) to snitch on you when you have your normal Bluetooth toggle set for off. So, turn off the "improve accuracy" bullshit.

Note: ExposureMatchingService currently needs a second app to snitch on you, but who knows if that is fully true. I kill it and also turn off the tracking "even when Bluetooth is disabled" so I have backup protection if my main Bluetooth is set for off on any given minute.

In addition, and not specific to the above...if ever needed or desired...

  • There are some apps in the Play Store which spoof your location and trick other apps, including Google Maps, into thinking you're in a different place. Several let you easy simulate your randomly walking at a speed you specify, in any general (you choose size) area box you choose. Say the "Fake GPS Location" app by Lexa. Yes, that app (a touch tricky to use the first time) also has a "Spoof Wi-Fi Provider" (Google normally looks at fixed wifi signals near your location to triangulate you, even if not connected via wifi) option for spoofing smarter apps. And allows easy toggle on and off, plus multiple saved locations.

But yes, if they want to, they can track where you were by cell tower reception.

However, to enable their functionality, you must first unlock Developer options.

Under the option "Select mock location app," choose the app that has location spoofing abilities. Once selected, you will now be able to use the app to change location, whether that in the town next door or another country.

Say, to report that you are in your house (when elsewhere). Yes, you can "see" yourself (your location) moving along a road in beautiful North Korea or Somalia.

NYPD will just carry out random stop and searches. They find a smartphone they will ask you do you have the app. After that, it will depend on how much a good lair you are.

If you don't pattern lock your phone they might even just look. If you are found not to have it. Either arrest you for endangering the public or fine you thousands of dollars.

It will be stopped by people not downloading the app and using it. This won't happen though. There are enough people out there that will download this app and use it that it will be presented as a success, then pushed out to other markets. Then it will be pushed further, along with other similar or related technologies. Then corporations will start requiring it for employees. Then it will spread more and become common place.

There is no stopping it

12
mellestal 12 points ago +12 / -0

We have this in Canada (15 minutes of "close contact"), and only about 10% of the population has downloaded that app - though only 5 provinces have it implemented so far. I won't download it, so there's that. It's not mandatory, yet, thankfully. It also doesn't track location but something to do with blue tooth connectivity or something - or some encrypted system. I still don't trust it and never will.

With companies I think they can only mandate it, IF the cell phone is their's to begin with and not a personal phone. Though having a work phone and a personal phone would kinda defeat the purpose of the system they want anyways XD

11
ProgramNerd 11 points ago +11 / -0

I’ve had Karen types come up to me from 50’ away yelling at me for not having a mask on. I immediately pull it out and say I have a mask for when I need it, but no one being around for 50’ means I do not need it.

Thankfully, even in the Bay, I’ve gotten by without wearing a mask much for the duration of the lockdown we’re still in. I just avoid people. Not hard when everyone’s pretending the apocalypse happened. Cops in my area are mostly based too. They’ll have them hanging from their uniform but only wear them if needed, which is basically never.

21
kish-kumen 21 points ago +21 / -0

I laugh when I see people driving alone in their vehicle with a mask on.

Like, do you wear a condom when you sleep alone too?

12
ClownTamer 12 points ago +12 / -0

We’ve got plenty of that. I’ve even had people proud of it. They were driving and had a mask on while alone in their own car and I was on the side walk all alone walking with my dog. They rolled down their window and stopped and yelled at me for not having a mask.

To them, having a mask on in the car all alone was an act of virtue. To me, it was an act of mental derangement. Keep in mind I was the only person out on the entire block and was near my home.

A lot of women who get abortions claim they got pregnant by accident. They almost describe it like they were chilling with their man and suddenly both their pants flew off all by themselves and then their groins became supermagnets with opposite attractions and they weren't able to stop from colliding into each other.

Maybe if men wore condoms all the time there wouldn't be nearly as many abortions.

3
Wtf_socialismreally 3 points ago +3 / -0

Stores I roll my eyes and do it. But if I'm using a disposable mask, I make a point to pull it off in front of everyone the exact moment I leave the store.

It's total bullshit. Yeah they own the place and yeah I don't mind because I would prefer people around me be comfortable / not scare any elderly who are scared for actually legitimate reasons but this is for short sprints of time.

Biden wants us to wear a mask everywhere in his Islamic vision, including outside on the sidewalk

2
ClownTamer 2 points ago +2 / -0

I laughed reading people criticizing his family for not wearing masks in there. They’d all been tested before being allowed in there. Nobody in that room had the virus. It’s not like fucking Trump or Biden or Chris wore masks. Biden’s wife wearing one was hilarious. “Bitch, you’re going to take it right off when you’re with Joe once you leave.”

2
SheepleMaster 2 points ago +2 / -0

Is it really legal for companies to require a mask to enter their business?

Seems almost like a civil rights issue the left is so fond of.

As someone who heard far more about Tim's Adventure To Redpill Land than actually watched his real content, but then finally subbed to Timcast just to see what he's up to these days, I'm actually somewhat shocked at how conservative he's become. No way he's opposition.

As sophisticated as the globalist propaganda network is (and mind you, it's coordinated, but loosely rather than monolithically, via the ownership cadre of the US major media properties, BBC administrators, and many, many more), I don't think they're so sophisticated as to wrangle someone like AJ. His outlandish approach, rather, can often serve the left's purpose by seeming to undercut his own arguments, but it's almost certainly coincidental, not planned.

I'd point to someone who says blandly-correct things yet accomplishes nothing, like Hannity, far quicker than I'd point to AJ. In fact, I don't actually point at Hannity (I think he's more an vain opportunist, like Beck but much smarter in knowing where his bread is buttered), mainly because he has great guests (John Solomon, Sara Carter, etc.) and gives them a platform, but you get my drift.

However, unless you are threatening to kill people or damage property then social media is firmly separate from school and should be protected.

28
RedSocks157 28 points ago +28 / -0

I left two fish stores today because I was accosted at both by rude employees demanding mask compliance. At the first one, I put the damn thing on only to be immediately approached again and criticized because it didn't cover my nose how they wanted. Drove 30 minutes across town to another store, walked in, and the owner immediately says "mask?" Turned around and walked out.

This is in Ohio. Our governor is supposed to be GOP but he's just a cuck. What's truly pathetic is how the mask thing is being driven as a wedge between people. I love aquariums, I'm sure I would've gotten along smashingly with all those people, but instead everyone leaves the interaction sour because of the fucking masks that don't even WORK.

18
deleted 18 points ago +18 / -0
5
Art-Vandelay41 5 points ago +7 / -2

No the only reason the mask thing is working is because it’s a medical issue. I use the term “issue” very generously. Even my father, who’s as based as they come, will call me on the phone and complain about people not wearing masks in the store. He is full MAGA all the way, but he doesn’t see it the way we do. Most Republicans are like my father.

But as soon as the globalists try to implement communism in a non-medical way, I guarantee you they will be thwarted.

9
Scroon 9 points ago +9 / -0

But as soon as the globalists try to implement communism in a non-medical way, I guarantee you they will be thwarted.

Yeah, but that's exactly why they're implementing communism in the medical way. This mask thing isn't a fluke. It's a prelude.

Vaccines become mandatory. Taxes are raised to cover all the additional medical infrastructure and tracking. Small businesses go out of business because they can't afford to comply with the health standard. Large corporations take over all commerce, and they will be controlled by government mandates and elite private interests. Etc.

Guess who the Harvard School of Public Health is named after? A Chinese national businessman. It's called the T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Guess who founded that same school in 1921 making it the first public health institution in the US? The Rockefeller Foundation.

Medical authority is the backdoor to power, because if you threaten someone's health, they get scared and stop thinking. Non-thinking people are just animals. Animals are easily controlled.

Never stop thinking.

Cuomo assured that privacy will be protected because the app doesn't use names or collect personal data

Well, which is it? Does it collect names, allowing you to contact those people, or does it not?

Your phone keeps track of what character strings it has chirped out, when you flag yourself as infected these strings are flagged and compared to what other phones have heard. If other phones have heard these strings a notification is sent to those phones saying they've been in proximity to someone infected, no names or contact info necessary.

Yeah, first you install an app on your phone, then, so many people forget to bring their phones with them, so you get chipped, you know, for EvERyOnES sAFeTy.

Also, to the first person to bring up the slippery slope: your Mom's a hoe.

Guess it's time to get a new battery and large SIM for my mid 90's indestructible Nokia 3310.

Think he is talking about using it as a phone. Not using whatever the internet looks like on those old phones.

Cut the cord, dude. Do you really need a phone in your hand at every moment?

I'm old enough to know what it's like to remember the only phone in my life was the cheapest one at Target attached with a wire to the wall.

My iphone has dust on in, from where it sits on my desk. iPhone 6. When it dies, I'm getting a damn flip phone.

Dear Cuomo,

Get fucked.

T_WIN_2020 5 points ago +5 / -0

It's already on your phone in the latest Android update (also Iphone). Not conspiracy. Go to your settings, search covid.

I’m old enough to remember when we were going to have a “2 week lockdown” to end covid.

Restaurants should have a bucket where everyone can put their phone while eating. That would really screw them up.

It's chirping out random characters, it is not making a connection to anything. You're as connected to each other as you are to a radio antenna or a guy yelling in the town square.

Well then your problem is with Bluetooth, not with the app and this stupid m(UH 1984 bullshit.

Wouldn't a run of the mill wifi connection or even 3G/4G data be even more prevalent, long range and vulnerable to this?

edit : Ah yeah maybe not, as bluetooth is peer-to-peer and they are not.

AtTheInauguration 4 points ago +4 / -0

This is already on your Android phones if you go into the settings.

That's just the API. It still needs one of the state provided apps to be fully functional. Without the corresponding app, the API built into Android and iOS does nothing.

1
A_Russian_Wall 1 point ago +1 / -0

You can remove the Android API by uninstalling Google Play Services Updates, disable Play Services, and disable Play Store to be extra safe.

When you need an app, find the APK online and download it and install manually.

Cuomo assured that privacy will be protected because the app doesn't use names or collect personal data

Uh...wut? How can the health department use app data to contact users who've been in close proximity with infected patients if the app doesn't have access to personally identifying information?

The app came as New York recorded an alarmingly high positivity rate of 1.52%

HO-LEE-SHIT GUYS! A positivity rate of ONE POINT FIFTY-TWO PERCENT! That's absolutely worth descending into a 1984-esque authoritarian surveillance state.

Break up big tech Trump then everyone will see the uncensored social media denouncing this bullshit. People have to see our numbers online than their sheep brain won't just constantly eat up leftist garbage.

You can turn on “exposure notifications” in iPhone settings as well. Just go to settings and scroll down a bit. It’s 🤡🌎

ProphetOfKek 3 points ago +3 / -0

Nah fam, I’ve refused to update my iOS since before the ‘Rona.

4
Genericwhitemale 4 points ago +4 / -0

I ain’t turning that shit on, but just the fact that it’s there is 🤮. If they auto turn it on i’m throwing this phone in the trash

4
Red_Turtle 4 points ago +4 / -0

Just as a heads up, Apple has been pushing updates against user knowledge for years. If you put off an update long enough, the phone/computer/whatever will update on its own in the background without asking permission. It's part of what ensured the updates to older phones got pushed through to mess up the battery life and force owners to upgrade to a new device.

We've got this contact tracing shit in Australia, it doesn't work unless everyone opts in. Just don't get the app and encourage others to not opt in.

In Australia they have a full on barrage of media about the "covid safe app" their pushing it hard. It won't stop you getting sick, it won't stop the spread of the virus. Its just another mechanism of control.
