I think taking the bait on the question puts Trump on the defensive and then the whole debate would have been about whether Trump apologized or clarified the right way. Just like when Wallace and Biden were demanding Trump to bend the knee and condemn white supremacy for the 100th thousand time, they were trying to turn the debate into a ChiCom struggle session. That question was all about getting sound bites for Biden campaign.
