The books have hints of that, but the story is also about the flow of history and peoples lives within it. The real monsters are all totally human, and even those with super special powers are totally human as well - in fact they are extra special flawed, because their special powers make them fuck up on even bigger scales.

But instead we got an ice zombie horde and dragons. Yawn. Who cares about that shit? The Red Wedding - that is what riveted us to the story. The unbelieveable but ripped from the pages of actual human history stories Martin worked into his plot - this was the heart of everything and why Martin can never finish the "story".
