Our country did not found slavery, it was around for 5000 or so years in recorded history before the USA was even founded. So why did the United States permit Slavery when it formed (this is where I get frustrated that people don't use common sense). Well, we were not a Union, we were just commoners/people who fled England because of their unfair aristocratic societies and their religious mandates to serve certain churches or else, they wanted freedom and thus left for a new land. Thus we were many different states who were all independent of each other, some had slavery, some didn't and believed religiously it was wrong. But when England threatened to burden us with undue taxes, and we rebelled, either we formed as a nation of ONE, or there would have never been a United States of America. So, the states/colonies had to compromise and accept that each state was free to accept slavery if they so wanted it. It was either that, or get defeated by England, and probably enslaved by them ourselves.
They did not have the votes to end slavery when they first formed the Union, so the Framers of the Constitution did the next best thing, they wrote the very words, in the greatest Document (save the Bible imho) ever written, they stated that ALL MEN WERE CREATED EQUAL..........We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
