Victoria was a very clever person. Became queen at age 17. Did a good job. Left country better than found it. Left royal family life better than found it.

Had a bunch of kids. Loved her husband. Was much smarter than given credit for. Is the author of much of our ideas about respectability. Made respectability seem charming and fun.

Did her best to hold back nasty forces. Didn't entirely succeed, but tried.

Adored a good gallop. Didn't truck with foolishness.

Occasionally bored her more learned and abstract thinking husband.

Was cute in spite of being short with a big ugly nose. Drew every eye in company, even in the presence of much prettier, more elegant women. Had that something of command.

Had legendary tact, when someone was embarrassed. Was actually nice, although did not allow herself to be photographed smiling. Married her first cousin unfortunately but that could not be helped.

In general, got it done.

There were problems, but she couldn't do anything about them. Held up her end.

Not bad for an ugly, ignorant girl of 17, who had the personal grit to use what she DID have, and proved that neither beauty nor the usual notion of mental excellence are always what is needed in a chaotic situation. Because she did come into a chaotic situation.

What did she have, to use? Internal firmness, and goodness, and lack of pretension. An honest appreciation of a loving dog, a pretty ribbon, a good horse.

She used primness as a weapon; she had to. She discovered it confers power. That was interesting.

Her country had recently lost America, and the royal family was a train wreck of nonsensical behavior.

She and her husband both came from icky, immoral parents, and they both put married life on the map again, as important, and attractive.
