i am not too worried about side effects, to be honest. if you look at the phase 3 clinical trials, they were the typical hospitalized coronavirus patient - many of them in poor health to begin with, 80 percent had at least one comorbidity and half had more than one. the president is obviously in much better health.
the real downfall of remdesivir is the same as when tamiflu was being pushed for the flu. a very expensive way to shorten the course by a few days, when the ultimate outcome was most likely going to be the same - recovery.
but in this case, four less days might be well worth the cost.

This is the right answer. This drug is used to shorten the length of the illness. That is what it is best at.
