But while I still have a minute and a half, does Joe condemn White Supremacists? He spoke at KKK members' funerals, you know. You say that 'White Supremacists' are causing the trouble at these riots, why is the Biden Campaign bailing them out, then? I've never heard YOU condemn White Supremacists, either, Chris, why won't you do that?" That kind of shit.
Trump was off his game... perhaps having Covid had something to do with it... or maybe he just needs to find his footing in these debates, remember his first debate with Hillary did not go so well, but he later destroyed her.
Trump never had more than 9 seconds without interruption. He answered the question in the best way possible, in a manner that stacked the priority messaging up front, and didn’t allow them to change the scope (which they did continuously).

So he needs to introduce the topics, try to frame them in a way that serves strategy (sometimes duel strategies), project his persona in the way he looks and sounds, not get flustered or made a fool, and *remove his opponent’s soundbite opportunities (this is why Trump interrupted so much with ‘off-topic’ stuff). Note that he has to do this juggling multiple issues and responses, all without knowing in advance what moments or comments will end up getting the attention, and knowing that any clear win will get buried.
In Trump’s case, the best way to show people that he HAS condemned white supremacy is to give the MSM a clip they can use to argue the opposite.
Otherwise, they won’t even show the clip at all, and it doesn’t even enter the mediaverse to be examined. Sure, there’s some negative cost to that, but in Trump’s case especially, the more scrutiny, the better he looks.

Some intensive interviewing might help extract those details.
