For type 1, it’s too bad we can only treat the symptoms with insulin rather than treat the pancreas itself. Maybe we’ll get there some day.
We're really, really close. They can now produce islet cells from stem cells (self-transplants derived from marrow or fat cells, of course, just like ALL of the stem cel treatments they're figuring out -- who ever would have guessed that cells harvested from aborted fetuses would cause transplant problems?!?!?). The only problem is protecting these cells from the immune system so that the patient's own body won't just destroy the new ones.
