I think it may be because external is a solution to the extreme pain that a woman has to go through during delivery, the discomfort/pain during pregnancy, and the damage the whole process can cause.
I'm female and it seeeeriously scares the hell out of me thinking about how a woman's spine gets shifted out of alignment during pregnancy. Then seeing further anatomy graphics showing internal organs being shifted and squished as the baby grows. Then I imagine the excruciating pain of shoving a human being out through a small gap in my pelvic bone. If I had an alternative to 9 months of pregnancy and delivery at the end, I'd jump at that technology too. I don't think there's any incentive to have internal uteruses in sci-fi settings.
Just like informing patients who want an abortion about what they're really doing to their baby and their body is something pushed in different states and is important (the most litteral form of informed consent), I feel that fully understanding what pregnancy does to a woman is equally important. I don't know if I'll ever go through with it because of what I learned. I don't understand why there isn't more empathy for those that don't want to go through a process like pregnancy and delivery. It's not pleasant. (Yes, I'm not stupid and I do understand the species depends on it. That's not the issue here.)
