Supposedly Taiwan is now writing "Taiwan" on the passports rather then "Republic of China" because they're tired of people mistaking the Republic of China (the official name of Taiwan) with that nasty People's Republic of China west of them.
Keep in mind, of course, that the ROC is older so it's the PRC that should have to create a new and unambiguous name.
