I lived in Houston then and there was a big stink about how racist it was for the White people to leave while the Black people were too poor to move out and away from their jobs. The truth was that crime had gone up and the schools were a joke so people fled for a safer and more family friendly area.

People fled violence and riots. They fled the inevitable crumbling of the cities — and everyone smart doesn’t wait, or otherwise they get stuck with the check.
And in some sense, a lot of whites people fled because they didn’t feel like living in a place where they were considered the enemy. And if black people are openly treating white people as the enemy, is it any wonder some will get the hell out?
You have no idea. The average building in Chicago is at probably 25-30% staffing, and the ones remaining are downsizing. My building had a suite of 13 offices go to 2, and this is typical 2-3x/week. The lawyers just rotate and work from home 4 days a week now. Every small business that by some miracle was able to open again, doesn't have enough custom to keep the lights on. The local cigarette/corner store takes in about $40 a day, the nearby coffee shop can't sell enough to stay open.
Blue cities are gonna be a bloodbath over the next 5 years. Probably literally once Politicians cut police services.
Mean while in my small town, we had a new retail spot open, a new cafe should up within the next month, and someone is looking at another building for a business. The owners for the hardware and grocery stores both have said sales have been up this year. Orders are up 90% at my little shop. The city has added 20% in property valuation in the last 2 years. Just a few hours away from Chicago.
They are moving up from Chicago, I assume? I am also in a midwestern city and we are getting (have been for a couple years) a huge Chicago influx (with all the benefits that entails).

Went thru Green Bay a few years ago on the way to Door County vacation. It was a nice place. Sorry to hear this is happening. But I will never visit nearby downtown Chicago. It’s been destroyed by our Dem politicians.

The fall is coming and you want to be at least 100 miles from the nearest metro area. Preferably further than that.
You can also try to organize your neighbor hood into a community watch. I'm sure plenty of your neighbors are feeling the same about the situation. Call up your local police station. Get a meeting with them, preferably lieutenant or captain rank. Working on solutions together can help to counter this rapid crime surge.
We moved out of LA once BLM picked up again. The way I see it, the several thousands of dollars lost breaking my lease and moving was pennies compared to what could've happened. Get out before you seriously regret it.
