I'd push for old fashioned fables and stories.

Teaching history requires going back in time (not going forward) so the student understands how things came to be in relation to their present day situation.

So much this. I really can't stress this enough to every parent here. These old stories legitimately saved my life. I'm not exaggerating: I think I'd be dead in a ditch right now without the Odyssey, of all the damn things.

Long story short, that old wisdom holds absolutely true, and if you want your kids to know, deep down, what is right and wrong and how to navigate the world happily then introduce them to these stories really young.
