Making wax slugs from birdshot target loads is easy and pretty effective. Paul Harrell did a test video recently against his standard meat targets; not as good as a proper rifled slug, but much better than unmodified birdshot.

Given that birdshot is a lot cheaper and more available in 12 than buck and slugs, it's a decent option.
