Those of you who know me know I'm a numbers guy. The FBI has released the 2019 Crime in the US numbers and I hope to give some perspective to the situation we find ourselves in. As many (read: most) of you guys already probably know, cities in this great country are being burned down because of a number of deaths in the single digits or low double digits, depending on which sources you believe.
According to the released stats, there were around 2900 black people murdered in 2019, a bit under 2600 of which were murdered by another black person. There were about 3300 white people murdered, about 2600 of which were murdered by another white person. That means that black victims comprised ~44% of the total victims while white victims comprise ~50% of the total (the remainder of this total-and all other totals-is comprised of the "other" and "unknown" categories). These numbers are orders of magnitude higher than the numbers that people are rioting over. For some aggregate numbers, white and black victims were 50.2% and 44.2% of the total victims, respectively. White and black perpetrators were 44.8% and 48.9% of total perpetrators, respectively.
In terms of interracial violence, 566 white people were murdered by a black person while 246 black people were murdered by a white person. In plain terms, white people are ~2.3x more likely to be murdered by a black person than the other way around.
In terms of black victims, 8.5% of the murderers were white while 88.6% were black. Simply put: black victims were ~10.5x more likely to be murdered by another black person than a white person.
In order to put these numbers into perspective, the Census 2019 Estimates put single-race white people at ~72.0% of the population and single-race black people at ~12.8% of the population.
