First of all, as a non religious person I don't accept he label "atheist" or "agnostic". I'm just not religious. Simple as that. I accept and believe that religion plays a vital role in western culture and support all efforts to preserve religion in public life.
Second, I cannot help that for reasons beyond my control I am not religious. I have tried and been unsuccessful many times.
I know that I will get flamed for this, but I'd like to share my own personal story. I, like you, tried my entire rational life, age 9-33, or so, to have faith. I would reqct viscerally and angrily to Christians who had the faith, because I did not, and I was jealous and scorned I guess. Why can they believe and I cannot?
What I can tell you 100% is that faith is a gift from God. And He gives on His time and in His way. You can only ask for it. But, when it will come, no one can say.
I asked my entire life, but God did not act until He wanted to. And I was given the gift of faith in such a miraculous way and literally overnight. I went from angry agnostic / atheist to not a doubt in my mind the reality of Our Lord and of God and thr faith....
I can only say....be patient. Realize you are powerless and the more you humble yourself and the you ask in earnest, the faster it may go.
For me,.I said, Lord Jesus, if you are truly real, then I finally want to know you. You must show me. Please.
And I kept asking and waiting. And eventually He answered. And it was undeniable.

Her prayers are powerful before Her Son, who is God. And she often obtains things much faster than my own weak prayers alone can.

Well said man, I was an atheist for a whole decade and 2 years ago I became a born again Christian after I had several near death experiences. Including cars tipping on 2 wheels right in front of a forest on the parkway, drugs and more. The lord saved my life and after I became religious again everything turned around for me- now I’m doing better than ever! God saved me. I’ve reached my goals- including getting into the college I always wanted to. Thank you for sharing and I’m glad you had a similar experience. Atheism leaves one devout without any meaning in life. My eyes opened up and I finally started to be grateful once I went back to my Methodist Christian roots, as I was confirmed when I was younger and used to participate in many church groups + camps. Don't know why you'd be flamed for this perfectly reasonable post. For what it's worth, I am as open as I can be to it. Circumstances of my life have led me to where I am, which is fine and I really can't complain about the destination (I have a lot of complaints about the journey). I can't say I know how I will feel in a year, 5 years 10.. I have no idea. I do have an aching emptiness sometimes and I wonder if religion would help with that, but at the same time I don't want religion to be a topical treatment for sadness - I need it to be something I just believe.
If I have to TRY to believe it, then I'm not being honest with myself. There are a lot of things in life you have to convince yourself to believe and I don't think this can be one. Sometimes I think I'm just too old for that to make sense to me now.

Faith is a seed that must be nourished. Here is a temporal example. Think of the invention of the incandescent light bulb. The inventor had no evidence that such a thing was possible and yet he believed. He failed over and over but never stopped believing that it was possible and eventually succeeded. The way he nourished the faith was by taking action and experimenting. You can do the same thing with faith in God. Try taking action with the words of Jesus. Pray, follow the Gospel, believe that God will answer your prayers (not that it will always be the answer you expected). Follow Christ as best as you can. Doing these things will nourish that seed of faith and over time your faith will grow into a strong healthy 'tree' that will produce fruit.
