Your body only keeps white blood cells around tailored to a specific virus for about 3 months after an infection, because it's a waste of resources to keep producing them. HOWEVER, it's T-cells that identify infections, and tell your body to start manufacturing white blood cells. Those stick around essentially forever.
The virus can theoretically mutate so it's no longer identifiable by the same T-cells, but viruses that mutate quickly like that die off faster, and as a result, tend not to be as deadly.
