I totally agree...in principal. And I think other countries take care of their poor quite well. The problem I have is American politics are corrupt as all hell, and so every legislation is a thinly veiled power grab. Furthermore bleeding heart liberals take it too far insisting the poor have cell phones, the best medical coverage, etc. Jesus said, "the poor you will always have with you", and "whatever you do to the least of these you do to me". So there's a happy middle somewhere that you can guarantee our government is going to fuck up.
Better to leave it to the private/non-profit sector.
