I know way too many people like this. It's utterly astounding. They have no courage whatsoever - not physical, mental, or emotional.
I didn't know this when I met them. I thought they were just regular people like me. I started to find out when the freakout started after the 2016 election, and really found out in March 2020 with the lockdown.
They love hiding at home, living life online, "socializing" with others only through Zoom calls, having everything delivered, and shrieking about the danger at every turn (while never giving a thought to those risking danger by delivering all their food and other stuff to their homes.)
That's why they went utterly batshit crazy when POTUS walked out of the hospital, stood on the balcony of his home and very pointedly took off that mask - and then said. "Don't be afraid."
For these people, that's they worse thing he could have done. If he can be so sick at 74 but still kick Covid's ass and go home and say "You don't have to be afraid" - they'd have to do the same thing!
They aren't afraid the lockdowns won't end.
They're afraid the lockdowns WILL end and they'll somehow be forced to go out into the world and face life again.
I really am shocked by this, after seeing it go on with NO end in sight for seven months now.
Maybe, instead of trying to talk them out of this, we should just leave them to it. Make it "okay" to sit at home and work only from there (if you work at all) and have everything delivered and avoid the real world as much as possible since that's what they so desperately seem to want.
To me, that's "existing." It's not living. But you can't make people go out and Live when they're just to damn cowardly to do it. Leave them to it, then, and find jobs they can do from home. The rest of us will go out and Live.
