When I had facebook a few months ago, this guy was talking about covid as if it was a mega-killer. I explained that, given the data we have now (early July at that point), it’s not as bad as we first anticipated and every age bracket has a 99% chance of survival. He says something like, “this girl I know has 20% lung damage. NO ONE comes out unscathed!”. I said that that’s not necessarily true, as most people have recovered fully. He basically scoffed then questioned if I even knew anyone who had covid because I was apparently being so ridiculous. I tagged my mom & my brother and stated they both had covid in June and are fully recovered (and they both confirmed). This guy was so angry that they recovered that he proceeded to wish they had died from it, he then said he hoped I would get covid and land in the ICU.
If you’re so scared of something, why would you be that angry when you find out it’s not so bad....? In the beginning, I was worried about covid as we didn’t know what to expect. But when I heard stories about recoveries, I’d be so relieved. Why would you wish destruction on a person because they’re showing you it’s not as bad as you believe....? Truly bizarre.
Seriously, people's cognitive dissonance is strong. You can throw facts in their faces, but they're so invested in the narrative that it does not compute in their minds.
I remember when reports came out that in California, despite their massive lockdowns, cases continued to rise just like the states that did not shut down. Instead of thinking oh, maybe cases are rising because lockdowns are bullshit, people's excuse was that people need to lock down harder.
Seriously! The thing that pisses me off the most about covid is all the doom and gloom around it. Cases are still rising despite lockdowns? LOCKDOWN HARDER! You can be asymptomatic! Wear a mask the rest of your life! No immunity! People have gotten sick more than once! YOU might not care about getting sick, but you’re risking the cashiers life if you go see your friends instead of locking yourself up at home and never leaving!
Especially if you talk about it with an average redditor. It doesn’t matter how minute the risk of death is, there’s always something else to worry about. You’re not allowed to do anything but live in fear the rest of your life.
Remember when tht picture of that pool party
concert from Wuhan came out months ago? People here were freaking out because they weren't social distancing or wearing masks. Lol! Thats the problem with people, they have a conclusion and work backwards. Like... Hello? Maybe consider that the whole pandemic thing is bullshit at that point? China is laughing at us.
Even today I've see friend's pictures from China, people are not wearing masks and living their lives.

My sentiments exactly.
