When I was a kid squares were square because they didn't want to not be invited to bowling nights or whatever. And decent people never talked politics anyway. You could know someone 40 years and never know their opinions. Well you might know their opinions on sports or movies or gardening or grilling. Those topics were considered part of the art of civilized conversation. Sex, money, politics, and religion were taboo.
