Before that it was an ice age that was going to kill us all. Before that, peak oil was going to kill us all. Before that, another ice age was going to kill us all.
Despite the fact that acid rain already killed us all. And killer bees already killed us all. And, flesh eating bacteria was going to kill us all...
I remember being little and freaking the fuck out because people were saying Florida was going to get separated from the rest of the US because global whatever. I didn't get to Greta thunberg around the world; my dad told me to stfu and stop being stupid.
If only they'd stop and think perhaps they'd realize the reason why the earth is warming up is because we're coming OUT of the ice age... would happen even if there wasn't a single human around.
I would argue that this mater in particular doesn't have much to do with religious fanaticism, I would actually wager that the crushing majority of global warming alarmists are nigh on nihilistic atheists.
Because a religious person at the very least believes in an universe of order, which is managed, hence they have some measure of trust that whatever happens it's "God's will".
The problem comes when you don't have that, when you believe that everything around you is wanton chaos, and that if YOU don't do something then it's all going to hell, then you run around with your hair on fire.
Funny enough both examples require a certain level of zeal, only to what this zeal is directed towards is where they differ.
They have that zeal that they feel compelled to direct towards something, but the rigid and unevolving orthodoxy turns them away from religion, so they end up using it all up on something as silly as global warming.
