The 92 election showed both sides that there were truly undecided voters in the middle, and for a while both sides began to pander to the middle, trying to tap into those voters, believing their “base” would never abandon them.

You saw more and more RINOs as the “moderate” swath of the middle got wider and wider. But it was always RINOs, never DINOs. Why? Because conservative platforms are always more popular. You don’t try to sneak into office on an unpopular platform, to try to implement the popular platform.

But this pandering to the middle did alienate the conservative base. Combined with Democrats push even further left with Obama resulted in the popularity of Sanders in 2016.

Trump reinvigorated the conservative base by by being unabashedly supportive of core tenets of conservative voters. Democrats have now pushed even further left, alienating moderate voters. Which results in more RINOs. There are too many conservative voters in this country for them to get majority support for their platform. So they push it hard where they know they CAN get support, while running “moderate Republicans” where they can then subtly push leftist agendas once they are in office
