I never looked into him or his politics too much, but even from a young age, he seemed to want to buck the system in the UK. Condemning the upper class for existing in an elitist smug bubble, and blaming the lower class (where he was brought up) for not taking responsibility for their lives and generally being the victim. Sounds like a bootstraps type of guy to me, and I'm happy to have him. I haven't been this surprised by a british musician's political opinion since I heard Morrissey voice his opinion of mass immigration of muslims in the UK
