California voted by 52% to define marriage as between a man and a woman. AG Jerry Brown and later AG Kamala Harris declined to defend the state constitution in court. The proposition goes through a several levels of court and eventually comes out as "unconstitutional."
California never voted FOR gay marriage.
Though even if the proposition had stood, the gay marriages performed prior to its passing would have still been considered valid.

The judges coopted that, iirc 60% voted against gay marriage but the judges overturned the peoples choice.
