My brother has severe TDS and decided to call our mom and nag at her for her Trump support. We are all keeping our distance from him and, as a result, he will spend the holidays by himself. Exactly what he wants. The TDSers just need their distance. THEY need to sort through THEIR emotions and mental illness.

We're on the east coast, he's in California so the distance part is taken care of. My wife has known about his growing TDS and other issues I had growing up with him so she wasn't surprised when I talked to her about what happened. We have a great marriage and she can handle quite a lot, even in pregnancy.

I think everyone should recognize that family transcends political opinions and be able to put their differences aside. Your father should be over the moon that you are adding another member to the family and carry on his name. If I try my hand at amateur psychology, I’d say he’s feeling isolated and alone. His own son can’t see that ‘truth’ that CNN tells him every night. After all, we’re dealing with professional agitators and dividers here. They literally get paid to make people mad enough to stay tuned.
I think your dad probably needs counseling, and I’d say, you do too. After all, you’re coming to the internet to get some validation for the frustration you’re feeling. Listen, I thought counseling was bullshit, but I’ve had a change of heart. If you’re willing to work on something and you want it to work, you can fix it. You don’t need somebody to ‘fix’ you or him. You might just need a pro to help you figure out a methodology to do so. Since covid, a lot of them will do a Zoom type call in, so it’s very convenient. If you have insurance, copay is like $30 every 2 weeks or whatever. Easy enough to try. Might learn something.
Thank you for your concerns and the psychology attempts. I am a therapist and around other therapists on a regular basis. I know that therapy can be a solution for this type of stuff but only if everyone involved is willing to grow and change. For my own safety, I just don't see how I can get off of a train that has no brakes.
