Californian here. Great suggestion; I've been doing this for a while. Exactly as you describe it. Last few times at Home Depot, I've had it on to get past the guard at the entrance, but then it's down around my chin for the entire time. No one's said a word.

Home depot doesn’t care. They don’t get paid enough to care.
An employee nicely asked me to put on my mask and I said I can’t wear one and she said oh I’m sorry it’s ok. Lol.
