I'm curious why you would say that. The United States has massive cities, surrounded by equally massive swaths of heavily populated rural areas, surrounded by massive swaths of not very well populated rural areas. There is a huge amount of terrain to hide in. And there's a huge amount of human terrain in which to hide as well.
Exactly, for the very reasons you outlined above. Thats why its not happening. It would turn into guerrilla warfare right at the start. No one is going to engage a combat force head on, but those combat trains look juicy. I stash my weapon and I blend right back into the population.
Sure, I agree with you for the most part. However, you have to understand that there are very large geographic political enclaves within America. There are entire swaths of the country that lean right, or lean left.
If it could be deduced with reasonable accuracy that some area had thousands of right-leaning fighters contained within it, you could justify a strike, with bombs or missiles.
A 100 vehicle convoy of right leaning fighters, betrayed from within, or if the left had some sort of other intel source, could be hit with a missile, bomb or rocket. There are many ways to involve large, conventional military weapon systems in an unconventional war. All you need is one guy on the ground who knows how to call for fire, or call for close air support, and you now have the involvement of conventional bombers, jets, attack helicopters or some other weapon system platform.
Also never forget about the fact that as the lethality of a conflict goes up, the rules of engagement get looser. If the right was steamrolling through cities and towns, the left might decide to start dropping large bombs. These kinds of things happen.
I genuinely don't know. It's difficult to imagine a ground war scenario inside the United States in which another foreign power doesn't get involved. A genuine insurgency inside the United states, involving thousands of fighters would be every bit as ugly as Afghanistan and Iraq.
I tend to think nothing would ever become completely widespread. I think that things would stay localized, there would be pockets of insurgency, and pockets of combat. Places like new york, florida, the large cities in California, I don't think there would be fighting there.
However, there are massive swaths of the country that are still pretty wide open and unpoliced. There's huge sections of forest, mountain, country in general, where you could hide hundreds of thousands of people out in the open.
If the military stayed neutral, and prevented external power from getting involved, I think the right would win pretty easily. But if the military actually got involved, it's a toss-up.
My belief is that eventually there would be some kind of balkanization, and the US federal government would decide it was in the best interest of the country to allow self-governance, or autonomy in certain regions around america. Almost like Pakistan allows Muslims to do out in the SWAT valley.
in which another foreign power doesn't get involved
Given that China is heavily supporting the left exactly in order to start civil war in the US to get rid of the current #1 world power I don't see why a foreign power would not get involved.
Operating within the boundaries of a small country is one thing, now try it on a continental basis. Not happening.
