Based upon my understanding of our common law, as stemming from England, as well as the prevailing law in jurisdictions abroad, which are mostly civil law jurisdictions, I imagine the burden of prosecuting a coup d’état rests upon the entity in power that was threatened.
In our federal system, if a state government entity like the governor was threatened as such, they might call upon the federal government to aid them in the prosecution. That would be reasonable in our case, specifically. However, many countries do not have a federalized government and thus the central government would be the sole authority that would be threatened, and would have the power to defend itself in form of prosecution. For example, the DOJ is an extension of our executive branch. If the coup was against that branch of the federal government, having the DOJ prosecute would be an additional degree of separation that may not make logical sense. It would be akin to someone attacking me, and instead of me attacking them back I send my guard-dog to attack them, at least that’s how it makes sense to me. This is because by the power of your election, your legitimacy, you are justified in facing the coup as your adversary. Not just in defense, but as an arbiter of punishment.

But that doesn't mean that it's open season--you've first got to exhaust all legit, legal means of bringing her to heel. Evers of WI has "only" killed hundreds, and none as directly as sending CCPvirus positive people to nursing homes, afaik. Denying medicine to sick people is a level of tyranny King George never engaged in.

Here's an interesting summary of it that was on Hacker News last night. The FBI helped them proceed with their plan (by helping to arrange to "buy explosives") so they could get their arrests. Realistically, the whole thing was just a big tacticool LARP that never would have went anywhere without the FBI involved.

I've been in several situations where I felt like people were attempting to lead me to say shit or incite me to do things etc. They were things I didn't want to be involved with anyway so I just walked away without comment other than making it sound like I completely misunderstood them or overtly disagreeing with them, which was honest not manufactured. You should have a sense of awareness that tells you when people are possibly full of shit or up to something. I almost feel like if you're stupid enough to be coerced by these guys, you deserve it. I definitely feel like these assholes deserved it for even considering kidnapping that bitch even if I would like to see her hang, that should be done through the courts. Most of our founders didn’t even want us to have a military because it gave the federal government too much power. Can you imagine what they would think knowing the government has its own massive private police force today?

Based upon my understanding of our common law, as stemming from England, as well as the prevailing law in jurisdictions abroad, which are mostly civil law jurisdictions, I imagine the burden of prosecuting a coup d’état rests upon the entity in power that was threatened. In our federal system, if a state government entity like the governor was threatened as such, they might call upon the federal government to aid them in the prosecution. That would be reasonable in our case, specifically. However, many countries do not have a federalized government and thus the central government would be the sole authority that would be threatened, and would have the power to defend itself in form of prosecution. For example, the DOJ is an extension of our executive branch. If the coup was against that branch of the federal government, having the DOJ prosecute would be an additional degree of separation that may not make logical sense. It would be akin to someone attacking me, and instead of me attacking them back I send my guard-dog to attack them, at least that’s how it makes sense to me. This is because by the power of your election, your legitimacy, you are justified in facing the coup as your adversary. Not just in defense, but as an arbiter of punishment. I'm thinking it would be just as easy to physically remove all Governors from Office at the Capitol. Bringing them to justice would require lawsuits already filed. Having them held by LEOs is the tricky bit, and anything else amounts to kidnapping / unlawful detention.
Everyone here will likely agree that there's a red line, and that beyond that red line it's open season. That said, just because the line is crossed doesn't mean that extrajudicial action is immediately justified. First you should attempt to seek justice within the system.
In this case, you can certainly argue that Whitimer's ongoing state of emergency was arbitrary and tyrannical. But that doesn't mean that it's open season--you've first got to exhaust all legit, legal means of bringing her to heel. And for good reason--the folks who were trying to reel her in by legit methods are the ones who ended her emergency order, not the knuckleheads who wanted to kidnap her.
