They're supposed to be the unofficial 4th branch of government that keeps a check on those in power to keep the citizenry informed. Instead, they work hand in hand with those in power to purposely keep the citizenry in the dark. This is not what the founders wanted.

The founding fathers wanted free men to have guns so they could rebel against the government then immediately put down insurrections. Life's full of quirky contradictions.
