When the Pope requests proof of your theory and you promptly write a book that serves as an extended insult to said Pope, perhaps you should not be surprised when he excommunicates you.

Funny thing was, they had a good reason to doubt the theory. They understood that the stars should move around a bit due to the Earth's movement around the Sun if this were true. The stars actually do appear to move, and this is called stellar parallax, but the stars are so far away that it wasn't measurable with the instruments of the time.

So they had actual scientific reasons to doubt him at the time and it was only later with Tycho Brahe that good data finally came about to prove this.
