The flip side is with rights comes responsibilities, like contributing to society. If you can vote for bread and circuses and 51% of the population decides that's the way to go, your country will never recover.

That's why we have electoral college. Especially since the states used to be way less intertwined.

Then when 51% of the electoral states have a majority that wants to vote to confiscate the other 49%s wealth. The electoral college does not save us from the tipping point into democratic socialism.
