You'd be amazed how easy it is to dox someone, and to link this firearm picture with this serial number to your name and address. It takes just a few hops. If for instance thedonald here were to ever get compromised and someone got ahold of IP information they'd see where you logged in from, and just run that across facebook history for those logging in from the same IP they'd have you just about nailed.
Or your twitter. And yeah theres NO WAY a nice, liberal anti gun company like twitter or facebook would EVER provide that info right?

This is a long time debate. I say why chance it? I wouldn't post pictures of my driver's license, my license plate, etc. Who knows what can be done with a serial number in this day and age. The question is what can be done with it in the future. Facebook can already scan license plates from pictures posted and store them. So again I say why chance it?

Plenty of folks will choose a username rather than use their real names, and post pictures with non-identifying backgrounds, and feel that they have preserved their anonymity. For some people, having their comments here linked to their real names could result in unemployment, or having their household harassed or threatened.
There were comments about license plates and gun store serial numbers, but these are false equivalencies. None of those tie you to your identity here.
I'll continue to warn people if I see a serial number. I believe that OP took it in the spirit it was offered, as most people will. OP himself pointed out that he was not concerned about this, and I certainly didn't "hassle" him for that.
