So one of the guys in my battalion is a praciticing Sikh, well not too long ago, we started working out together. And we started hanging out a lot. And our battalion because they had us on lockdown so we couldn't take block leave in the summer. We got to make up for it recently.

Well, before i left to go home, I posted a photo of one of my gym workouts with my buddy.

Well my one cousin is a complete baby freshman at a four year university and is basically drinking the kool aid, and she knows I voted Trump, and starts bitching at me as to how I can have a muslim friend and still vote Trump.

Well my buddy goes 'I'm not a muslim I'm a Sikh.' Well....she then pisses him off because she apparently thinks that Sikh is another word for Sunni Islam. And then proceeds to lecture him on not lying about who he is.

He basically reiterates he is not a muslim and her response is 'then why do you wear a turban?'

Well.....my friends, Sikh's are some of the nicest people I ever met, but daaaammmn, he started tearing her a new asshole.

Sikh soldiers in the US military are not abiding by the uniform standards. They get an exemption, and they get to wear beards, long hair and a head piece. As much as I like Sikhs, it is annoying and it pisses me off. The rest of the people in the military abide by the standard, why are Sikhs special? Pretty soon everyone in the US military is going to look different, because we will have to have a separate standard for every group. That's all well and good, but all the white people abide by the uniform standards.

Jesus, this comment is dumb. Any full-time religious headgear is allowed. The only reason Christians don't get to wear it is because we don't have any.

What about those noodle fucks...do they get to wear a colander on their head? Guess it is a kind of helment. Paint the damn thing green and give it a chin strap and there you go... (pastafarians?)

If it's an officially recognized religion, yes. That's how liberty works. However, their "religion" only requires that on "holy days", so they wouldn't be allowed to wear it daily. Jews get to wear their yarmulkes.

Also, there are exceptions to the exception as well if it begins to affect unit cohesion or morale.

The Army allows Jews to wear yarmulkes. Last I heard (late 90s), the Air Force did not. I wonder if this has changed.

(Edit: I visited the Air Force academy in Colorado and asked them. I was about to graduate pharmacy school, and the AF was actively recruiting pharmacists then. You'd be commissioned as an officer on joining up, they'd help pay for your schooling, lots of benefits, but it wouldn't be possible to live as a religious Jew (no Kosher food available, wearing a yarmulke - even under a cover - would be considered out of uniform, problems with Sabbath observance, etc.) so I wasn't able to consider that as a career option. There was actually a lawsuit from one Jewish airman who wanted to wear a yarmulke, and he lost the case.)

The whole reason why the US military has a standard is so that everyone looks alike. Are Sikhs not americans? Why do they need special exemptions? When you decide to serve in the US military, you become part of something greater than yourself, and something greater than the individual community that you come from. You decide to JOIN the military. There should be no exemptions.

Why do they need special exemptions

It's called the first amendment. You just gotta look it up.

The point is this, white men in the US military uphold every standard. We uphold the uniform standard, the grooming standard and every other standard. It's minorities, and only minorities, that have started asking for these exemptions. Now you have white people wanting to get exemptions too. One notable example is the Norse religion exemption.

Diversity ruins everything, and Sikhs are leading the charge on that inside the us military. We don't need them. If Sikhs want to serve in the US military, they should do it the way that white men do it. Ostensibly what they're saying is that if they cannot wear their hair long, have a beard, and wear headgear, they won't serve. Doesn't sound like they are very assimilated to me.
