I gave this a long thought after discussing with my husband how they recently completely butchered the casting of "The Stand." In many cases it is true that the sex or racial characteristics of a character are interchangeable if those details aren't central to the plot. I agree it shouldn't matter for the most part. However, with history, yes, it matters a lot because these people lived. Where it matters most in fiction is making a character seem real. I understand a black female physician in 2020 but in 1820, that would have been quite a rarity, for instance. Fun for a what-if but definitely shouldn't be written as if that were the norm. You wouldn't want to replace your male firefighter character known for his ability to carry several people in and out of burning buildings with a female because that stresses the margins of what is humanly possible. It also can matter simply because that is how the author wrote them. Full stop.
Strip away every other reason, what really gets me in this recasting crap is the double standard. It's okay to recast a male character with a female but the reverse would be not be tolerated. It's okay to remove white-skinned people from a narrative as long as the person replacing them is anything other than Caucasian. The reverse would be seen as a hate crime. It is complete hypocrisy. I won't hold my breathe for them to cast an Asian Martin Luther King Jr. because we know this isn't about representation.
