It rose quicker than Christianity did so what does that say?
It rose because its inherently a ideology for state control. The Caliphate's goal is to conquer states using minds not to save their souls.
A violent ideology created in Northern Africa, uniting a people around it to control and subjugate those who do not submit. The region was unprepared for it. Thats why it rose.
That region was mostly Christian at the time.

Christians are pacifists in the region. But to suggest they were in control or numerous enough to hold the levers of power is just untrue.
