Jesus commanded his disciples to baptize people, but never said it would get people to heaven. We don't know why this command was given, only that it was. I got baptized out of respect and obedience to Christ. I imagine when I get to heaven, I can ask why we did that.

Are you talking about kids or babies? I was christened as a baby, but still got baptized later. Neither are getting me into heaven. One was my parents promising to raise me in the Way of the Lord. The other occurred after I made the decision for myself. I then decided to make it public through baptism that I had chosen to follow the Lord.
