ANTIFA get's its name from a PreWWII German communist group led by one Ernst Thalmann, a Stalinist who taught that anything other than communism is fascism.

After the war, Thalmann's followers took over East Germany and named streets, schools, and hospitals after him.

It's not surprising that the people carrying his flag are also following his beliefs. What's surprising is that these are mostly Americans following an East German communist hero that was largely unheard of in the USA until just a few years ago.

How many East German operatives do you suppose got stranded here in the states when their government collapsed?

That would make for some good clandestine spy video games. Also, a very plausible theory.
