As far as why they do that, remember that most people - and leftists in particular - have a hard time thinking past first order consequences. As we all know, most are not actually thinking of removing people from private healthcare (although I'm sure some do), they're just thinking about how good it will make them feel to be such a good person to get the people who aren't on healthcare on it. Beyond that, they feel it's a bunch of complicated consequences that they don't understand and would be too difficult to figure out. Incidentally, that's why they don't believe it when you spell out a slippery slope to them - anything past first order is just too difficult for someone who comes to their ideas via "intuition."
