Without a steady presence of a male figure to question and challenge a young boy, he grows to fixate entirely on the females present in his life. A young boy who spends more time with a female than said female's true male counterpart will develop a nature to believe he knows how to handle a woman when in fact he is acting purely on confusion. Moreso, a lack of a steady male counterpart to the motherly figure will implement the notion in an adolescent man that there's no need to stick around when you don't want to, resulting in the cycle of single mothers.
It's not all at the fault of women. Some men need to take responsibility and foster their children. But the system does not favor them to do so. Likewise, human nature and human corruptions tend to lead to a strong presence of female teachers among pre adolescents. This can be balanced by having a stable male figure at home to guide, counter ,and challenge the young male subconsciously.
Not only that, but I've heard this from boys raised by single moms. When you're a young man, at some point, your mom just stops being scary to you. When young men begin pushing the line, it's up to their fathers to get them back in line. To wield their wisdom and educate their son, and yes, sometimes wield their authority to put them in their place.
And at the point where a boy has grown into a 15 year old, 6' tall young man, a 40 year old woman just can't do that.
Yeah, I'm sure it's subjective. There's no such thing as a rule that suits every single family. I'm just speaking the perspective of guys I've talked to who grew up without dads.

Naw I'm more scared of my mom than I am of my dad.
