Believe it or not, common core math actually had a methodology as to why they changed it the way it did. It came out completely retarded because what it essentially boils down to is trying to make average and below IQ students people think like gifted students, which is never going to work. What they did was they talked to a whole bunch of gifted math students to find out how they did math, which was predictably some non-standard way of doing it. Then, the mid-wits at the Department of Education attempted to understand it themselves, fucked it up, and the result is what they're teaching kids. That's why your nephew thinks it's stupid - because it was an ego project that no one will recognize as broken because they don't want to admit they were wrong.
We need to abolish the Federal Department of Education and return control to local states. It was a very minor office until the early 80s and education has only gone downhill since.
At least not until my kids get out of their charter schools in a few years, thanks. If they give you all the tax money back that you paid for those schools and for public schools, you could use that money to pay the fee for the same charter school. Or just vouchers like people have been talking about forever. I wouldn't look at it so much as tearing children away from schools they like as installing new management.
If they gave me that money, my kids would immediately go to private school. Charter school is great, but private school is even better. But my point is that all the kids from the public schools would need to go somewhere, and they'd inevitably end up shitting up my kid's great charter school.

They keep advancing children who obviously aren't ready to advance because they don't like the bad statistics of having failing children. It lowers a school's ratings. By the time those children are ready to graduate high school, they won't have the skills it takes to go to even a Jr. College.
I have a relative who taught in DC area public schools, and volunteered to teach reading to the hardest cases in the third grade. Who had been “advanced” there on age alone without being able to read.
She had kids who at age 7 and 8 didn’t know how to speak. Leave aside reading, their spoken vocabulary was like 100 words. It is worse than you could possibly imagine. Home life, one strung out parent with mental, substance, legal problems from hell, the works. Teachers ignoring all of it, like maybe it would go away.
Then after doing this to their charges, they spend the next 8-9 years trying to boost their “self esteem” by telling them nothing is their fault, society is to blame.
I'm sure there are a lot of bad teachers. I've also seen good teachers struggling under poor administrators, and dealing with terrible children with bad parents.
Government destroyed the black family, dead families destroyed generations of innocent kids, generations of cynical communist teachers and politicians excused it all to feather their beds and breed dependency, the next generation weren’t innocent any more and began pushing drugs, pimping, and murdering everything in sight, and now we have trillion dollar corporations paying billion dollar tributes and censoring all criticism of blood libeling black nazis marching through our streets with guns and molotovs screaming death to whitie and burning our republic to the ground.
We past excuses ten exits back. Now everyone involved is utterly damned - and what is worse, they know it.
My high school was ranked the #1 public HS in the state, and made the top 10 public schools in the entire country, when I graduated in '07. It fell off both by the time my cousin graduated around '11 to being at least in the bottom 50% public schools in the state. The difference was obvious, and jarring, when I got certified to teach, and went to work at the #1 ranked public school in a different state. It was awful, couldn't believe what they were teaching, and what was allowed of the students -- left after a year to get another degree and move on to a different career. Real shame; they should be trying to keep people like me, who finished at the top of their class and would make great teachers, but the system, and especially the teacher's union (which rewards mediocrity, doesn't reward a good teacher, doesn't punish a bad one, no incentive, etc) pushes people like myself out
