They’d fish out the snacks and dump everything else. Hundreds of pounds of food wasted a month. We often tried to salvage what we could when they’d just throw the bags on the floor. And we haven’t even touched the real big issue yet, which is violence. Fights were a daily thing. There was pretty much at all times a fight going on somewhere in the halls or in the classroom. Usually the punishment for a fight was about an hour in ISS. A kid needed on average 5 fights before anything more substantial happened, like a one day suspension. Notice how I said “in the classroom” too? At least once a week a teacher got hit. I had quite a few take swings at me. Again, usually just sit in ISS for an hour, right back the next day. The first time a kid took a swing at me, principal demanded to know what I did to provoke him... apparently telling him to remain in his seat was enough to set him off, and it was my fault. Again, why? It’s their culture.
And now the big one, where I decided I was done. A group of 6 of the biggest assholes followed me out to the parking lot and they showed me their knives. Said if they didn’t get credit for my class toward graduation, they’d kill me. I was terrified. I ran to the school resource officer and the principal. The principal told me I had to give them extra credit. You guessed it, it’s just their culture, these things happen. And we wouldn’t want to wreck their lives with a police report over something like this would we? For the first time ever in my life, I told a

Well — this summer I was showing an apartment. After the prospective tenant saw it she asked for an application. It turns out — she had $800 in income per month but my rent was $1000 per month. When I told her she couldn’t afford the apartment she asked why I have $800 a month. I explained 800 is less than 1000. She looked confused as she challenged my position. After about 10 minutes discussing this I asked — would you rather have 10 candies (I held out my 10 fingers) or 8 candies (holding out 8 fingers). She answered 10. I countered with why. She answered it’s more.
i live in a district in Michigan where i'd say the school my kids go to is roughly 60% white 25% black and 15% other. i've only recently got involved in school politics and policies, but has a real eye opener told to me. it is a fairly poor district and the poor districts are punished with a behavior incentive policy.
long story short theres are a limited number of times you can punish students for major offenses such as fighting, drugs etc.. if you go over the limit you are fined 10k i believe was the number, well the district s that have more money than us elect to add in that fine right into the school budget so they can maintain order whereas we end up letting kids get away with many things unpunished so as to avoid a fine. i cant believe they think this is a good policy, i guess the idea is that you're not doing a good job if there is lots of issues with your students, well guess what my district is very near detroit and the students we get aren't exactly model students to begin with
one more thing i forgot to add the number of allowable punishments for black students is a lower number than the number of allowable punishments for white kids. me: WTF?!!!
We have 13,000 school districts in the United States, that’s a great many school districts. You won’t find a single one where blacks perform better than Asians or Hispanics perform better than Asians, always you find the same pattern. Is that because in every school district where they’re trying to get the same outcome for every group, is everyone somehow imparting racism holding down the blacks? And why is it in what is alleged to be a white supremacist society, why is it that Asian students are doing better than white students? Not everybody is the same and has the same inherent abilities and that’s okay, we need to accept these things.
I can relate to this post... My dad was a pastor and he took a church in a downtown area in the south, it was the summer before l started the 8th grade. We had been raised not to be racist that you judge people for the content of their heart not the color of their skin. So off to the 8th grade I went where I was the minority (guess 98% black, 1% white and 1% other). It was one of the most eye opening events in my life so far in the almost 60 years on this planet. I only went for a 6 months before my parents sent me to a private school. In those 6 months, I had all my stuff stolen several times, the tugs would surround me and just take it, I was told it's just bulling and it happens in school, seen a teacher get punched, had one boy when the teacher would leave the room he would masturbate in front of the class, one kid was tossed from the second story balcony (never saw him again after the ambulance took him away, rumors were he died later) saw a fight where they broke a boys leg by kicking his knees in. The teachers never taught anything. I was always sent to set in the hall and most of the time I didn't have clue why. Nothing worked in the in the school, if it was fixed it was broken again within hours so why fix it. They would pee in floor, I remember one guy peeing in the library on the books.. But I thought know one was going to read them anyhow. Sense then I have had a hard time thinking it's the white people fault. There were probably some bright minds there but they never had a chance. That was years ago I can only imagine how bad it is now.
That is amazingly awful. Bless you for trying. In junior high, my son wanted to do drama. He got quickly tired of trying to do it because of the kids brought from across town who sat and made fun of them all. He gave up. He tried art but there were those same kids in there harrassing the teacher and because his grade was not good enough they wouldn't even let him take second year art. He had natural ability but that didn't matter. He ended up getting his GED because the crappy school just didn't care. I know my boy was a talker, but a good kid. I got called by the vice principal in JH who said he was talking in class so he was not allowed to take his semester test. What the heck kind of crap is that? He got threatened by some idiot who said he couldn't wear his blue shirt. Eff that. He was big enough that he wore that shirt anyway.

I was told to give 50s instead 0s for missing assignments because they’ll feel better if they fail by less. You’d be aghast at what comes out of the mouths of school administrators.
Also, most teachers are education majors - not exactly a rigorous program. A friend and I used to joke about how you could tell the education majors from the teachers who had content degrees, because the education majors were the ones asking dumb questions at the meetings. Most are barely literate, themselves. (I'm being snarky, but most adults in this country, educated or not, can’t write well.)
I believe it was Sowell's Black Education: Myths and Tragedies but I could be remembering wrong. Either way in one of his books he goes into detail about why our public education is so bad. The one that always sticks with me is "the education college at universities is statistically the worst department at the school. It is commonly used as a way to keep students in school that would not succeed anywhere else."
If we are turning out bad teachers, of course the students will not do well. It is why I can't stand when teachers talk about how hard their job is or how badly they are paid. Do we need teachers? Yes. Should they make more and have an easier job? No.
I believe it is real because I got out of teaching long ago because of similar encounters. You dont know how bad it truly is. That post made it sound like a picnic. Black kids threatened to slit my throat at one school and I had enough
