Admonishing the use of 'preference' with respect to ones current sexuality presupposes the individual cannot change their mind at any point in the future, that they are locked into that sexuality for life. 'Orientation' merely requires the individual consciously assess and understand their current position relative to the environment/world, like a snapshot in time. IMO, preference is a decision reached solely within the individual, but orientation is comparing your situation against others around you. Not unlike the difference between conservative self reliance and progressive group influence.
