I do believe OBL became a protected asset of either Paki intel, US intel or possibly both. The fact OBL was living so close to Paki military leads me to think he was in some form of protective custody, maybe similar to the old Colombian cartel kingpins who were permitted to "build their own jails".
Seal Team 6 are heroes, but could have easily been misled into a mission that was more like a controlled hunt.
