Many moons ago I worked for a smallish division of a large multinational corporate, we had ~2,400 staff nationally, and our company secretary took responsibility for personnel, along with a single secretary/assistant.
come the 80's HR push, we had a 5 person HR team foisted upon us, and being blunt, in less than 6 months the company was at standstill, they had piss off every single facet of the company, from the individual employees, right up to the managing director, they constantly were sengining out HR dictats on everything, none of which was even remotely required or called for.
After 8 months we all as employees went to the MD and basically said it was us or them, (note the lack of union involvement here), he then went to the corporate group board and got clearance to sack the entire HR team and go back to how it was.
My company’s HR is basically there to help people with benefits questions and to keep the peace when there are internal issues. Fellow employee tried to push her to start doing sensitivity training and her response was that we have a group of respectful adults and that won’t be necessary. I was so glad
