The far left always has to try and hijack every good thing we can do. Ignoring all sustainability, high speed rail is something we should focus on especially for trips between close big hubs, like LA to SF, Phoenix to Las Vegas, Chicago to Indianapolis, etc.
Look at SF to LA, it’s a one hour flight and if you factor in the time to check your bag, go thru security, wait because you showed up early to not miss the plane, then baggage claim at the destination you are looking at least 2 hours total travel time. A high speed train can cover the distance in under 2 hours, and honestly makes more sense and less hassle for a traveler to take than a plane. Trains in the USA are slow at about 70mph today so they are only feasible to take from the suburbs into the closest city. Think of how much easier it would be if any flight that is currently <2 hours could be replaced by train and overall take the same amount of time?
The train cars would be filled with joggers who don't pay the fare,, and no normal person would put their family in danger by traveling on one.
This has already happened in my area with busses and light rail. Light rail stations are where you go if you want to get beaten with a hammer for your iphone.
Comparing buses and light rail to high speed rail is a piss poor comparison. Joggers never leave their city and they use buses and light rail to get around. I’ve used high speed rail before and it’s much cleaner and safer. Compare it to Amtrak or Metra, but less shitty.

I've used high speed rail in Europe. Its expensive, so migrants can't afford it.
