Yes, I thought of the Swift Boat Vets. But I don't think that attack was coordinated from the top like a traditional October surprise. I followed that election closely and the Swifties were vocal throughout. The TANG memos from the Dems were the big October surprise in 2004. That backfired gloriously and Dan Rather had to resign.
I have since lost respect for Bush but I'm still damn glad he won that election. And it was a fun one. The first election with significant reporting from citizen journalists (bloggers, etc.).
