deeply connected investigators might have access to NSA-captured email traffic dumps that might contain the messages. But while this was a 'definite' in the year 2000, it is probably not so any more. Despite the tinfoil paranoia floating around, most email transfer agents encrypt on the network and there is NO indication that the NSA has some Master Key as was famously imagined in the movie, Sneakers.

Knowing how arrogant these folks have been as of late, my guess is there was something big and obvious in plain sight in areas you'd typically be backing up files for a customer, or even the desktop.
