I think the drugs/prostitute stuff is relevant as it hammers home the fact that there is no way in hell someone like Hunter could be hired by the companies he "worked" for, or entrusted with the investments he was, without having the family connection to Joe. And no business pays out money for something where they're not getting something back in return.
